What a micro-influencer is in Nigeria

Last updated 20 September 2026.

If you have looked this up before, you will have found four articles giving four different follower counts. That is because there is no official threshold and never has been. The word describes a way of working, and the numbers attached to it were invented by whoever was writing at the time.

What people mean when they say it

A micro-influencer is someone whose audience is small enough to still feel like a group of people. They post about one thing, their followers know them for that thing, and a recommendation from them lands closer to a friend's suggestion than to an advert.

No standards body defines the term. Every follower range in circulation traces back to an agency blog quoting another agency blog. A page that gives you a cutoff is giving you one writer's decision, so treat any figure you find as a convention.

Why a brand would choose a smaller account

A large account sells reach. A smaller one sells credibility inside a subject, and the two are bought for different jobs.

Consider a brand selling accounting software to Nigerian small businesses. One post from a well-known entertainer reaches far more people, almost none of whom keep books.

Now take eight posts from people who actually run small businesses, each talking to their own followers about their own bookkeeping. Fewer people see it, and all of them are closer to buying. It also costs less per placement, so it fails more cheaply when it fails.

There is a quieter reason too. A creator with 4,000 followers reads and replies to comments. That relationship is the thing being bought, and it is harder to keep as an audience grows.

What it takes to be paid for it

Being called a micro-influencer does not pay anything. What pays is a brand choosing your post over somebody else's, and in Nigeria the usual obstacle is that a brand cannot confirm anything you tell it.

On Flixerpay there is no follower minimum at all, so the word is doing no gatekeeping. Your audience figure comes from the accounts you connect, which is what makes it worth something to a brand.

Two thousand confirmed followers in one subject beat sixty thousand that nobody can check. The whole board is built on that holding.

Campaigns state their bounty before you claim, starting at ₦5,000 for an approved post. You can see what counts as proof on proving your reach to brands.

Where to start

Say on your profile what you already post about. Campaigns are filtered by niche, so that is how the right ones find you. Connect the account you actually use. Then claim something small and finish it, because an approved post does more for your next claim than any description of yourself.
